Joan Graves is a multidisciplinary artist based in central Alberta, Canada. Her acrylic paintings, collages, drawings and poems explore themes of identity and the psychological aspects of life. Through personal experience and understanding, her practice is to define, communicate and represent an authentic female gaze and a perception of womanhood. Her work provides personal accounts of a female self-concept, and is intended to stimulate a sense of critical thinking as to how female figures are represented and understood. Joan Graves utilizes a fictional narrative aesthetic in order to address such themes, while also contending with her harboured love for pattern, nature and storytelling.
